This is The Witcher map I illustrated: the map of Geralt of Rivia’s world, the Continent of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy saga, which I created for the Spanish editions of Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga, published by Alamut Ediciones, including the collector’s edition of The Last Wish. The books have been on sale for a while, but here it is, together with its updated version.
What The Witcher map shows
The Witcher map covers the Continent where Geralt’s story unfolds: the Northern Kingdoms of Redania, Temeria, Kaedwen, Aedirn, Lyria and Rivia, the forest of Brokilon, Cintra, Sodden and Verden, the islands of Skellige to the west and the Empire of Nilfgaard in the south. It includes a scale in miles and a compass rose with a wolf’s head, a nod to Geralt’s School of the Wolf.
I drew it in black and white, with a line style inspired by old engravings, so that it would print cleanly on the pages of the book and feel like a document that belongs to that world.
About the Witcher saga
Geralt of Rivia is a witcher, a superhuman mutant who makes his living hunting monsters in a land of magic and wonder. He carries two swords on his back: one of steel for men and one of silver for beasts. Geralt deals with strigas, manticores, griffins, vampires and chimeras, but only when they threaten the peace. Ironic, cynical and always on the road, he travels from village to village offering his services, and more often than not finds that the real monsters hide behind human faces.
Why the novels needed a map
Sapkowski’s saga moves constantly between kingdoms, rivers, mountain ranges and borders at war. For many readers, a good map is what makes it possible to follow Geralt and Ciri’s journeys and to understand the politics between the Northern Kingdoms and Nilfgaard. That is the job of a book map: to help the reader find their way without ever getting in the way of the story.
Updated version of the Witcher map
